Sometimes when I’m walking and a man looks at me

Now this song is about a man named Lewis.

Lewis H. Michaux to be exact.

Now Lewis owned a little bookstore in Harlem,

And one day while he was sitting in his bookstore,

Some black boys came in with their fists up screaming, “black power black power!”.

He said, look sons I’d like to straighten you out.

He said, black is beautiful but black ain’t power,

    Knowledge is power, sons.

    CHORUS

Cuz you can be as black as a crow,

You can be as white as snow,

    But if you don’t know,

And you ain’t got no dough,

You can’t go and that’s for sho’.

    V2

Now Lewis also said that when the white man landed here he brought two weapons

One was the bible and the other was the gun

If he didn’t humble you with the Bible,

He crumbled you with the gun.

And they’re still praising the Lord,

And passing ammunition all over the world.

    CHORUS

Cuz you can be as black as a crow,

You can be as white as snow,

    But if you don’t know,

And you ain’t got no dough,

You can’t go and that’s for sho’.

    V3

So as I was listening to Lewis’ words,

I thought a couple of my own:

The human collective strives to be connected

Our minds strive the respect of intellect

    Our souls; no regret

Our bodies; the joy of no neglect.

We are constrained by societal norms,

Born with individuality to only conform,

And the cycle goes on in sync.

So I think what Lewis is trying to say here is,

Live life, love life, and be smart.

Take your piece, don’t play your part.

    CHORUS

Cuz you can be as black as a crow,

You can be as white as snow,

    But if you don’t know,

And you ain’t got no dough,

You can’t go and that’s for sho’.

Daveed do you know what your name means?

Zion is the place where earth and heaven meet.

    There's a time for war

And there's a time for peace

Brother, I want you to know bravery

    Through me

    CHORUS

Let your feet be led by the grass, sand and sea

Let your heart be led by your soul and you will see

the strength of a tempered heart.

the strength of a tempered heart

    V2

Daveed, I want you to know love, fearless love

Zion, I want you to know freedom

    Stand, stretch your hand

    And beauty will embrace you

Brother I want you to know honesty

    Through me

    CHORUS 2

So I'm letting my feet be led by the grass, sand and sea

I'm letting my heart be led by my soul so I will see

the strength of a tempered heart

the strength of a tempered heart

the strength of a tempered heart

the strength of a tempered heart

    Estuvimos en Escocia

    cuando él parecía feliz.

Me pude ver allí en esa

    tierna y escarpada tierra.

Pero sabía que mi corazón pertenecía

    en Granada…

    V2

    Nací en Estados Unidos, pero

mi abuelo es de Escocia y

  • She was perfectly perfumed

so dogs and fools would follow.

She found ecstasy in stealing time:

    The greatest piracy.

O and her fucking dog, her picket fence,

her pool, her married parents, her mowed grass.

I never felt I was good enough.

She never thought I was either.

    Just enough to fuck her

    once in a while.

And then there was the second

    lady of the head.

She was a vision of Vienna

with her love handles and breasts.

    O My Salvation Army suzanne!

    My goodwill pack rat.

You were a tarot card hippie tease.

But thanks for sharing all your weed.

    Then there was the third

O I thought she must be the one.

    Hardly a hidden treasure.

A leftover from a faded era.

    With her cheap, dirty crystals,

    and tacky wooden mules.

To think I took you to my sacred hotel.

To think you were my muse.

Good thing I didn’t write any songs

    about your ugly clogs.

    You thought everything was beautiful.

Well it ain’t, art therapy degree.

And your beliefs were part of the lost and found junk

you lugged around in your olive green satin purse.

You thought you were so down to earth

    with your barefoot feet.

    Fuck I loved her feet.

They were tattooed and so delicate.

    O heartbeat

    of my imagination,

    O moonlit illusion,

    I hear your call.

    I want to harmonize.

    I want to drown.

    I want to die.

  • V1

Once they let the ship to burn

Once they let the mast to light

Once they had a hold on me

Once they led the way for you

    V2

I love you like this house on fire

I wish it were a dark nightmare

    I wish for lighter melodies

    That lead us on away

    CHORUS

Hunger, hunger, look at how the hunger moves

Hunger, hunger, drives me in my love for you

    V3

Where they meet down in the valley

    Where both cannot be fed

So it was made to seem to us

    So the captain said

    V4

There you took me in my love

    There you proved them wrong

And with every wedge they drive between

    Stronger grow my arms

    CHORUS

Hunger, hunger, look at how the hunger moves

Hunger, hunger, drives me in my love for you

    V5

Love that sailed a thousand miles

Met it with a deadly foe

    A little drop of poison

From a father to a son

    CHORUS

Hunger, hunger, look at how the hunger moves

Hunger, hunger, drives me in my love for you

  • V1

Pick a stone from the sea

    color fading in the heat

So the sand swims around me

    V2

I know the sound of waves so well

    Echoes of the womb

Like my mother knows my heartbeat

    CHORUS

    One side on the ocean

    The other on the bay

    the space in between

    is where I remain

    Forever an island

    Always alone

    Interlude

    V3

Am I caught in a spell

    standing within the dunes

    winter in my bones again

    V4

    As wampum

    or sea glass

    Sorrow washes upon my shore

    CHORUS

    One side on the ocean

    The other on the bay

    the space in between

    is where I remain
